Tools of the Gambler Trade

Merrell, the savvy gambler that he is, has a few necessities that he carries with him on the trail. For this assignment, I created an image of the overturned contents of Merrell’s saddle bag.

The first step was, obviously, to give some thought to the sort of items he might carry, starting with a the saddle and bags that overturned in the first place. Obviously a gambler would carry around a deck of cards and a pair of dice, so those there easy. The next item I chose was an old western style pistol, being in the west without one is a dangerous prospect for any man, but especially so for one who makes his living by winning bets against other men. Everyone in a while a cheat, a sore loser, or a plain ol mangy varmint might want to test their mettle to get back what they lost or to take what they never had. A traveling man that he is, Merrell gets quite a bit of use out of his old compass and map as well, looking for new spots to travel and make his way. Obviously all the swanky saloons are marked, and there is a coded addition to help him locate his buried loot. Banks are none too useful out on the frontier. Last, but certainly not least, is his luck rabbits foot given to him by his father when he set out on the road. It is both a token of the hard work and sacrifice that his father underwent to raise him proper, and a trinket to bring him good luck when his outstanding wits and skills aren’t quite enough.
Afterward, I had to find images in the commons that I was allowed to manipulate to create the image. The challenge here was finding places to search images and using search terms that would lead me to the things I want.
Finally, I compiled it all into the image seen below. Each of the items was put on their own layer with an old wood grain table as the background image. Not that it looks entirely realistic, but putting the pieces together requires some rearranging and consideration to make it look like a coherent image rather than a bunch of scattered items posted on a background. I did not go so far as to add the shadows to make the image look more realistic, but looking at it now I wish I had. Maybe I will update it if there is some time.

Star Wars Recreation

In this visual assignment, I had to recreate a famous scene from a movie with a picture. After choosing the famous scene where Darth Vader chokes someone using the force in Star Wars. I enlisted the help of my dad and mom for the picture. My dad is playing Darth Vader, my mom is the camera operator, and I’m the guy being choked in his seat.

Visual Assignment – What’s in Your [saddle]bag?

IMG_2735[1]

What does Rose Oakley carry around in her saddle bag? Just the essentials. Water, a lantern, and her trusty utility knife. Traveling light is the best thing for an outlaw.

Love & War

Before the war, Ricky was a scrawny kid from Brooklyn just trying to fit in with the world. He didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life. Whether he wanted to work at the local bank or trying to work as a waiter at the jazz joint on the other side of town. He just wanted to make a difference in the world. He didn’t know how, until Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan in 1939.

Meanwhile, Ruby was a pretty girl fresh out of college who was working in her father’s newspaper company as his assistant that made sure he made his appointments. She thought that she could be doing more, but didn’t know how she could make a difference in the world. She didn’t know how , until the bombs hit the state of Hawaii.

From that point, Ricky immediately joined the Navy to support his country in World War II and Ruby quit her job with her father to be a nurse for wounded soldiers during World War II. Ricky was the cook on board the same ship as Ruby, and from the first time their eyes met. They knew they were the one’s for each other. After meeting her while she was standing in line across from him, he began to write letters to her and handing it to her whenever she was in line. And after reading them, she would respond the very next time she was in line. Then they would go back to their posts on opposite sides of boat. This lasted for years, until the War was over.

Finally, after years of writing to each other and falling in love, across from each other in the cafeteria line. They got to leave their posts and finally kiss the love of their life. He was now a cook for the Navy and she was a nurse. Now that they had found out each other by trying making a difference in the world, they now knew what their world was. It was each other.

What’s In My Saddle Bag?

What’s in my Saddle Bag for surviving in West as the Sheriff’s son? Here’s a list of things in my bag.

The first thing I need in my saddle bag is my Water Canteen that has an image of a pistol on it. Water is important for staying hydrated and healthy.

The second important thing I’ll need to survive, is a Western Saddle Blanket that can be used when I need to rest or to cover me from the rain.

Then I have an extra Western Revolver and bullets to go up against all the dangers of the west.

I have food for me and my horse of some ranch style beans cans that I can put in a pot that I have if I want to.

And the last thing I have in my bag is a Jack Daniels lighter to create a fire to cook the food.

Photoblitz

For this visual assignment, I had to take pictures of objects that dealt with each requirement in 20 minutes or less. It was fun, but also kind of tough because of my disability. But I got some nice pictures.

  1. The 1st picture I took was of the time I started, which was 8:21 at night

Start Time

2. The 2nd picture I had to take was of something that represents Music, and figured that music can come out of the Bose SoundLink Mini that I was listening to. So it can be expressed as the music machine.

3. The next picture I had to take a picture of a some sort of sharp edge on something. So I took a picture of one of desks in my house which has sharp edges, that would surely break a tooth if you fell on it.

4. After taking a picture of the desk edge, I decided that the best way to take a picture of something that represents loudness was to take a picture of my phone with the volume all the way up on it. If you were to listen to music while at that volume then, your ears would probably hurt.

5. This next picture was kind of tough, because I could not find my favorite number listed anywhere in my house. To resolve this I looked up one of my favorite players that wore my favorite number of 3, and took a screenshot of a picture. Allen Iverson is one of the main reasons why my favorite number is 3, because he is pound for the pound the best player in NBA history.

6. After having some issues on photo 5, I was easily able to take a picture of something so close that people shouldn’t be able to guess what it is. So I won’t say what I took a picture of. You have to guess what it is, and the only hint I can tell you is that it is in a house.

7. Then it was dinner time, and I still had to take a picture of something shiny. So I took a close up picture of something that was so shiny that the picture seems to be a selfie, but it’s actually me and my camera reflected back.

Shiny Reflection

8. For the last picture, I wanted it to be the funnest picture to take. That’s why I saved taking a picture of my food in the shape of a face till the end. I used pancakes for eyes, bacon for a mouth and eyebrows, then eggs for a nose.

9. Finally, I took a picture of my end time and it was way less than I thought it was going to be. I thought it would take the whole 20 minutes, but it actually took about only 10 minutes.

Dots, Lines, and a Curve

For this visual assignment I had to use a drawing software to create a piece of art by only using 5 Dots, 4 Lines, and 1 Curved line. So I found a way using Sketchbook Pro to create Mickey Mouse with a hat. I used three dots for his his ears and head, then put 2 more dots as eyes. After I did that, I used all 4 lines to create his hat and then finished the face with a thick curve for a mouth.

Can you guess what is in each of these paintings in this picture after I distorted it? I’ll give you the hint that it’s a food that you can eat.

Who wouldn’t want to be a McGraw?

This photo alone is scary enough, but adding the 106 makes it 10X worse!
