Acrostic Photo Poem

I chose this assignment because I felt I could be creative with it. I chose the first picture because during my childhood I had never been to the beach living in western Pennsylvania and my parents were more like the age of your grandparents so traveling wasn’t really in the picture. As an adult with children I was able to go on our own. Now I love the beach and the trips to the beach. The second picture was chosen because I love apples, pictures of apples, apple décor, and especially recipes with apples in them. I love a good salad with apples diced up in it. As you can see the pattern here I have chosen each photo with the point that it is a favorite of mine. I love the rain at night no matter where I am. Being in Pittsburgh in my childhood I went to a lot of games at the three rivers stadium and watched baseball and of course the Pirates are my favorite team. The beautiful azure sky you see while I am at the beach and another favorite sport of mine is going to the races. As a little girl my father raced, participated in the demolition derby and was a top mechanic in the pits. Of course I loved being a part of that and spending time with my dad. And the last but not the least important is my love for animals. I love pets and have always had several at one time. I have or have had each on pictured here and love them dearly. They are an important part of life and especially a child’s life.

Finally, here is my acrostic photo – can you guess my name?

Acrostic Photo

I enjoyed this assignment very much my name is not always easy to adapt things to because of the repeated letters. I used power point and then saved my images as a photo so that I could upload it to Flickr. By adding text boxes I could label each one and the photo itself. This was a fairly easy assignment.

Unsuspecting Friends

2 Stars

UF

Ha Ha! This assignment was fun, easy, and different. I knew I would see most of my friends in class or just hanging out so there was no shortage of opportunities to snap a picture. Firstly, I tried to get take a picture of them just talking or doing work. Secondly, my goal was for them not to notice until after the photo was taken. As you can tell in the bottom picture two of my friends caught me, but there faces are still goofy, shocked looks. The funniest part was when they asked why I took a picture or what I was doing, I answered with “homework” then a chuckle.

The Street Girl

Street GIrl

(cont.)

Time was when I’d gladly have listened,
Before I was tainted with shame,
But it wouldn’t be fair to you honey;
Men laugh when they mention my name.Back there on the farm in Nebraska,
I might have said yes to you then,
But I thought the world was a playground;
Just teeming with Santa Claus men.
So I left the old home for the city,
To play in its mad, dirty whirl,
Never knowing how little of pity,
It holds for a slip of a girl.You think I’m still good-looking honey!
But no I am faded and spent,
Even Helen of Troy would look seedy,
If she followed the pace I went.
But that day I came in from the country,
With my hair down my back in a curl;
Through the length and the breadth of the city,
There was never a prettier girl.I soon got a job in the chorus,
With nothing but looks and a form,
I had a new man every evening,
And my kisses were thrilling and warm.
I might have sold them for a fortune,
To some old sugar daddy with dough,
But youth called to youth for its lover,
There was plenty that I didn’t know.Then I fell for the “line” of a “junker”,
A slim devotee of hop,
And those dreams in the juice of a poppy;
Had got me before I could stop.
But I didn’t care while he loved me,
Just to lie in his arms was a delight,
But his ardour grew cold and he left me;
In a Chinatown “hop-joint” one night.

Well I didn’t care then what happened,
A Chink took me under his wing,
And down there in a hovel of hell —
I laboured for Hop and Ah-Sing
Oh no I’m no longer a “Junker”,
The police came and got me one day,
And I took the one cure that is certain,
That island out there in the bay.

Don’t spring that old gag of reforming,
A girl hardly ever goes back,
Too many are eager and waiting;
To guide her feet off of the track.
A man can break every commandment
And the world will still lend him a hand,
Yet a girl that has loved, but un-wisely
Is an outcast all over the land.

You see how it is don’t you honey,
I’d marry you now if I could,
I’d go with you back to the country,
But I know it won’t do any good,
For I’m only a poor branded woman
And I can’t get away from the past.
Good-bye and God bless you for asking
But I’ll stick out now till the last.

-Bonnie Parker

Yeah the actually Bonnie of the actual Bonnie and Clyde was a poet. Who knew?

The assignment was Poetry Art. I found the poem here, and then the image I used was this:

Screenshot 2015-01-29 at 2.41.53 PM

I chose the image because in my version of the Bonnie and Clyde story, they’ll be stirring up trouble on the east coast and then planning on driving out west and hiding somewhere in California, and I figure they’d drive through a lot of desert to get there. The photo editor I used is called pixlr and it’s an app you can find in the chrome webstore if you use google chrome as your browser. I only used that because my good computer with photoshop had run out of battery and I was feeling really motivated and didn’t want to wait for it to charge.

So the first thing I did was take my little magic wand to the sky to select it, and then I deleted it because I wanted to choose my own shade of blue for the sky. Then I took the main image layer and edited the curves, made it less saturated and warmed up the color.

Screenshot 2015-01-29 at 2.51.09 PM

Then I just used the gradient tool to do the sky, and I picked out a font and placement for the bit of the poem I was using. And then it was all done!

Birdie’s Fountain

A Whole New World- 2Pts

I had this picture of the water fountain by the Bell tower and with all the birds that like to fly around there, I just thought why not enlarge one to accomplish the a whole new world visual assignment.

Just Call Me Missing In Action

Would a rose by any other name smell so sweet?

My last 3 stars are going towards my Acrostic Poem.

I wanted to use three words that had meaning to me, but may not be understood by others right away. I chose the words Mermaid, Island, and Airplane.

The reason I chose the word Mermaid is because when I was little, that is one thing I wanted to be. I’ve lived by the ocean and the bay my entire life, and I have been swimming for as long as I can remember. I would stay in the water so long that my hands would get extremely pruny. My parents always told me that if I wasn’t careful, I would turn into a fish. I promptly told them that I wouldn’t turn into a fish, I would become a mermaid. That was my dream (which to a 5 year old is pretty realistic).

I chose Island because, well, I live on an Island and I am quite proud of where I’m from. Now I don’t have a typical Long Island ( or should I say Lawn Guyland) accent, but none of us on the east end do. East Hampton will forever be my home, no matter where I end up living in the future. I could not imagine living away from the beach though. Fredericksburg is even too far away from water…and I don’t count the river. That is not water I would like to swim in. But besides that, the island also relates back to the M and mermaids. If i hadn’t have grown up where I did, I probably wouldn’t have dreamt of being a mermaid.

Lastly, I picked Airplane for A. My dad has been flying for most of his life, so obviously I have spent a lot of time at the East Hampton Airport. To be honest, that is probably where I learned to walk. My dad was more of a stay at home dad, and I was well known at the airport. I even learned to ride a bike and drive a car there! (I still haven’t learned how to fly a plane, though.) The airport became like a second home to me, and right now they are fighting with our town to basically keep the doors open. People complain about the noise airplanes make, and that it is too close to their house….but I think that is stupid since they probably got a great deal on  their house since it was so close to an airport. But anyway, I am very pro airplane and pro airport, and I love everything that comes with flying (minus the turbulence).

This poem is important to me because it represents a part of me that some people wouldn’t see directly. It goes into my backstory and my history, and allows for people to maybe ask more questions about me and my life.

FINALLY HERE IS MY BEAUTIFUL ARTWORK

Acrostic

Now you’re probably asking how I made this lovely acrostic poem. Well, I actually made it on word. I took three blank polaroids, and pasted three images on top. I did all of my work in Word because GIMP and I don’t get along too well yet. I took the picture of the mermaid at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. The Picture of Long Island (as the 51st state) I found on google and uploaded to flickr and the airplane picture I found directly on flickr. I downloaded the fonts previously from DaFont.com, and used them to add to the art. I didn’t play with any filters, though I considered putting it in black and white to go with the theme of Noir. However, I didn’t really like how it looked, and I preferred the color.

Thus this puts me at 11.5 stars and I am done for the week :)

Veronica’s Hometown- Clarkson, Missouri

3 Stars

town done

Veronica’s hometown of Clarkson, Missouri is a small one with a population of only a few hundred. Most of the town is rural, encompassing multiple large farms and wide open farming land. Clarkson is near one of the main highways that run through Missouri. This allows the town to have enough traffic and people for a small downtown area on the edge of town. It is in a downtown apartment where Veronica lives and works at the lounge. Her family still lives in Clarkson as well, however they stay mostly on their farm only coming into town a few times a year.

I choose the pictures above to capture a few elements of Clarkson. The first being that the photos I found had to be black and white. Veronica lives in the 1940’s and any pictures from her day would of course be in black and white. Next, I wanted to get several pictures of rural areas: wooden bridges, long dirt roads, and small farm houses. Lastly, I had a create a downtown in which you would find the lounge that Veronica works in. This town had to have some “night-life” aspect in which Veronica’s story would work. But the town still had to remain small for Veronica to want the leave and see bigger, better places like New York City. It wasn’t that hard to find pictures in black and white, however what was hard was the low number of rural black and white photos to choose from. It was much easier to find town or downtown photos.

Not quite what it seems

painting

I thought about this visual assignment for a little while. I knew I wanted to capture something with a good amount of color to manipulate and play with. When I saw this painting, I immediately knew that it was what I wanted to use for this project. As I said before about the kinds of things that attract my lens, I really enjoy vibrant colors and unique images. The texture of the painting is also something that really stood out to me.

This was a great photo to play with in terms of saturation, brightness, contrast, highlights, shadow effects, temperature, and other editing features. I took this photo on my phone and used the app Afterlight to size, shape, and edit the photo. Although it’s just an iPhone app, it actually offers a large variety of editing features that help enhance photos. I use it a lot to bring out color, sharpen, and crop or align my photos.

I had a lot of fun messing with the effects on this photo, and found that playing with the different levels exposed colors I didn’t even notice before. I felt like the end result had a bit of a “pop art”-esque effect, which I thought looked really interesting. It was cool how messing with the effects on this picture really changed the main components of the picture itself, showing both how easy it is to manipulate visuals from their original product as well as how many layers there can be to a visual that the human eye can’t even detect.

What’s in your bag?

This visual assignment was must do assignment. So I looked around my room and found this pouch in my school backpack. I always carry this around with me. Let’s look at closely what I have in this flower pattern pouch.

First, I have a pen and a notebook. Just in case, I might need to write down something important like assignments that professors give out or due day.

Right next to notebook, you can see the yellow box. It’s band-aid. I get paper cut easily so I bring with me. Sometimes I see people who need it, so I just take it out from my pouch.

The pink object is toothbrush cap. I do not know why it’s in there but I think I put it in when I went on trip during winter break after the trip, I did not take it out from the pouch.

As you can see, rest of the objects are make-up things. Since it is winter, my lips dry up quickly. I put immediately on my lips so it does not dry out and see blood on it. As same reason, I bring handcream with me so I can put it on.

It was good time for me to take out some stuffs and clean my pouch. It was kind of heavy for me to carry, and now it’s lighter than before. :)

What’s in your bag?

Star Is A Star

Visual Assignment:

So much attitude in such a little dog.

For this assignment I uploaded the picture to Ribbet and used the editing slide bars they have to make it look like my dog had on makeup.
