On this dailyshoot we were supposed to take a monochromatic picture of something. So I used the greyscale effect on my phone and took a picture of a sombraro and some other stuff that my friend had on his wall because I thought it looked cool. Sorry that my past pictures have been so blurry I’ve been using the camera on my phone and its getting a little scratched on the lens. Hopefully after I clean it the pictures will look better!
For this visual assignment I took a picture of an old Arizona “Mucho Mango” can that had some ash in the top. Then using instagram on my phone I used the toaster filter on it to try and edit the colors. They didn’t change too much but I like how it kinda blends in with the curtains behind it. Nothing too too exciting but I think it looks cool.
The Four Icon Challenge -
While sorting through some of the movies I had on my comp, I landed on For Love of the Game, in which a baseball pitcher who doesn’t want to admit to himself that his career is coming to an end has one last chance to showcase his talent on the field and keep the woman he loves from leaving. The baseball of course represents the game he plays and loves and has spent his whole life obsessing over. The heart also can be tied in with the game, Jane who he loves and almost loses, and the team he has stayed with his whole (long) professional career. In opposite corners there is the conflicting old man and young man, age is something that Billy (the pitcher) had to deal with throughout the movie with fans yelling at him for not retiring yet and new, young hotshots coming into the game that could possibly force him out. Through pitching he also has developed some sort of shoulder injury that has worsened with age and appears to just be getting worse, another reason to close out his career as a pitcher soon. The different age pics can also represent Billy accepting the inevitable changes that are about to occur in his life, finally moving on and finding the strength he needs to let go.
Common Everyday Object -
Just experimented with some of the functions in GIMP such as posterize, hue-saturation on different colors, and slight adjustments to the color curves using a pic of my keyboard. Doesn’t look amazing but I’m just trying some things out! Original had a dark, wooden background and blue keyboard glow. Didn’t realize how much you could do with a free program like GIMP!
Danger Diabolik is one of my favorite Mario Bava films, and this animated GIF is taken from probably my favorite scene in the film which has Diabolik tearing around in his bitchin car driving to the tune of Ennio Morricone’s best song off the soundtrack “Driving Decoys.”
I would narrate the process here, but I already have elsewhere. My fourth visual assignment, which means I have met the course requirements for week 1 and can move on with the game….can you?
VIDEODROME
In honor of Dr. O’blivion so graciously teaching our course, I decided to do a four icon challenge based on his breakout (and only) role in Videodrome.
*SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE MOVIE*
The handcuffs represent the material broadcasted in Videodrome (oh, you know what I’m talking about). The television is clearly, well, because half of the movie is staring at a television, and because it is the driving force in the plot. The gun represents the fate of the main character Max Renn. Finally, the videotape, because that’s how O’Blivion communicates throughout the movie. I had considered putting the gun after the tape, however, I felt that in the nature of this course it would be more appropriate to highlight the Doctor’s role by putting it at the end.
This was fun to think about! I had lots of movie ideas (including lost in translation and eternal sunshine.. to name a few).
Say It Like Peanut Butter -
This may seem like a stereotypical, nothing but action movie for a guy to choose, but 300 is just so badass, had to do it! Might be slow loading maybe I should’ve made the gif a little smaller but this is where Leonidas taunts the Persians after the Spartans are told to lay down their weapons. Of course this is something the Spartans wouldn’t do this scene is right before the first big fight where the Persians are funneled into a narrow passageway they call the “Hot Gates” so only a small number, or wave of soldiers, can fight the Spartans at a time.
An Album Cover -
My random band name was “1844 in the United States” while my album was called “Nothing But the Past” which somehow actually sort of go together? Changed the sizing of the nice random pic I got some but didn’t want to alter the colors and mess up the scene. Also downloaded some different fonts to try out as Windows doesn’t come with many and finally found out installing them is as easy as copy/pasting them into the fonts folder! :O
For this visual assignment (Triple Troll Attack, GO!), I decided used one photo from cogdogblog flickr account, a quote from Hamlet, and signed by Bianca O’Blivion
Last semester maybe one or two ds106 participants did Timmmmyboy’s Averaging Flickr Concepts assignment, but this semester it seems to be one of the most popular. One of the reason may very well be Tim Owen’s awesome tutorial. Interesting how the assignment bank will in many ways start to reflect those changes of interest and focus over time, very cool. A whole host of folks did the Averaging Flickr Concepts assignment.
I think creating a tutorial for all these assignments would be a cool cool for going at ds106 into the future, and I would love to see more from the good folks out there. I’ll pitch in my part as well. Needless to say, I also did the Averaging Flickr Concepts assignment which forced me to download a trial version of Photoshop—which would be a layup for anyone in ds106. And Tim’s tutorial was brilliant and the assignment was easy. I averaged the keyword blue, and inspired by Lou McGill I tried to do something with the final image as a background—and not having the Photoshop skills she obviously does for cut out complex images I took a silhouette of the recently missing Dr. O’Blivion and made another “Missing Persons” poster.
