Visual Assignment – What’s In Your Bag?

We were tasked with showing the contents of our western character’s bag this week. Since my character is a drifter, I assumed he would have few items, mostly practical tools and weapons.

in my bag2

The wild west is a dangerous place, and wanderers have to fear outlaws and the law itself. The rifle is a Winchester 1886, the revolver a Smith & Wesson Schofield, and a standard Bowie knife. Of course, you need a waterskin in the dry and dusty desert, as well as some money made from various odd jobs.

I cut out these objects in Photoshop, then placed them on a wood table texture. I could have put in more effort to make them look like they were placed there, but I procrastinated this week and I’m pretty short on time.

What’s in Louie?

Louie

Everyone, this is my pride and joy, Louie.

He is full of a lot of things, but I took a picture of the most important items.

~Keys: Need to be able to drive my car

~Wallet: Have to have money to shop!

~Water: Stay hydrated

~Snack (in this case muffins) : I am always hungry so I carry some snacks for emergencies

~ Hair brush : Which I never really use throughout the day

~Cosmetic bag: Contains Advil, chap stick, tide to go, lip gloss, mouthwash, and mascara

This are items I take with me everywhere and if I forget something at home I sure do notice it gone throughout the day!

Old West Items

The directive was to pour out one’s character’s bag and write a description of each item carried around in it.

Here’s the items in my character’s bag:

There’s a lasso. My character carries it around just in case he needs some rope. He never knows when he needs it. I can be employed during many tasks such as rounding up cattle or tying something else up.

His saddle isn’t technically carried in his bag. His horse carries it around. It was on the floor while the shot was taken.

Hard tack is included. My character gets very hungry. He’s on his last two pieces, so I imagine he’ll want to find the nearest town and buy some more.

A night gown is also in that bag. That cowboy doesn’t like sleeping in the same clothes all of the time. He can’t sleep in the nude either since other visitors sometimes stay in the same room.

So I have no cowboy or old west items at my house. So I ended up obtaining a bunch of pictures online and photoshopping them all together as seen above. I figured those were some of the essentials someone might carry around with them in the old west.

What’s in Sally’s satchel?

Hey y’all it’s Sally! I saw that one of the assignments this week was to show what’s in your bag so I thought I would show my trinkets and handy things I carry around with me!

First things first, I’m a bartender so I obviously have a shot glass in my satchel. Ain’t no way I’m leaving home or the saloon without it. This one is special too since it was given to me as a gift my an ol’ cowgirl I haven’t seen in a while.

Then I have a bullet shell from the first gun I ever shot with my Pa and brothers. I kept the shell because it reminds me of the simpler times when I was a child running around my home.

Next is a lighter. I have this in case someone wants a fancy drink on fire. Also it’s great if I get stuck out in the middle of nowhere and need to build a fire and keep warm. It’s happened quite a few times. My brothers like to mess with me to say the least.

Sunglasses are also a must out west. With the heat, dust and the sun, I need to protect my eyes! Plus I make ’em look real nice with my pretty cowgirl boots.

The other two things are lip balm and a nail file. I may not be much of a looker but I do like to keep my nails looking clean and my lips nice and smooth. Plus the peppermint in the lip balm keeps my breath nice and fresh.

I don’t ever carry cash on me just because there are few who have it out for me and the last thing I need is to get ransacked and end up dirt poor f you’re wondering why I don’t have money! But that’s all there is to my satchel!

Bob’s bag

My LAST assignment bank post for the week is what’s in your bag. This assignment has you take a picture of the contents inside your bag, except we have to do it about our character we created last week. Well this posed a problem for me since my character is a guy so I don’t own any guy bags or like items they would carry around so I totally winged this. If you want to read more about Bob the Rancher visit this link.

This was super hard for me, but in his black bag is the following: “Cowboy” boots (yes I realize they are cowgirl boots, but I don’t own cowboy boots for guys), cowboy hat, a water jug because he is out on the ranch all day, an egg that he accidentally stuck in his bag from his chicken coop, work gloves and a baggy of some animal food that he can give to his chicken or other animals (it is cat treats in real life). This was the best I could do.

What’s in MY bag?

Hey Y’all Agnus here, I heard one of your assignments this week was to check out whats in your saddle and I thought how fun! Ill give it a go. So this is my saddle (I hate the word purse), and well it’s pretty boring but I got the most basic essentials for living in the Wild West!

  1. Water: Its so dry and hot out here you always need to carry around a bottle
  2. Gum: I love me so gum, so thats always a necessity plus if I ever don’t have time to grab some lunch before heading to work at the saloon I just put a piece of gum in to hold me over!
  3. Lasso: You just never know when you are gonna have to whip this out and help someone out in town whose lost control of their horse
  4. Hand Sanitizer: When you live and breathe a pile of dirt 24/7, this is a must.
  5. Chapstick: You don’t know chapped lips till you live in the Tombstone, AZ.
  6. iPhone: Yes, even us westerns have some nice technology
  7. Wallet: My friend got this one for me, not really sure who Kate Spade is though? I heard it’s something swanky
  8. Hairbrush: This is just handy, no reason for having it

Well, thats about it besides the random pennies and receipts sitting in the bottom of my bag. I’m no girly girl so I just keep the basics in my saddle to keep me going in this town! Have a good day Y’all!

I found this assignment to be fairly easy because I used the best photoshop app in the world, fotobom, which makes everything so much easier. I just googled pictures and then cropped them to all fit with the saddle. I liked that we had to incorporate our character in this one because well I don’t carry a purse around so it was much easier creating a fake one and narrating in her perspective, and also it was a fun twist on the assignment.

Mrs. Dean’s Saddle Bag

Mrs. Dean is a homesteader’s wife, so she gets out in the field and works. Being a wife she also goes inside and becomes the “cliché” house wife at the end of the day. She is skilled in many areas and is always prepared for either role she is asked to play. This is what she carries around with her in her saddle bag, so she has the necessities at all times.

IMG_5952

She has her easily foldable boots, chapstick, and bandanas for when she is called to work hard out in the hot sun all day. She also has cooking untensils for when she needs to whip up a meal quickly. Either role, she takes her jobs very seriously so she wants to always be prepared when a task comes her way.

What’s in the cowgirl’s bag?

One of this week’s required tasks was to complete this visual assignment. But, since the theme of our course is western I will be describing to you what is in my western character’s bag. If you don’t recall from last week my western character was the one and only strong but sweet cowgirl named Talie. You can read all about her here. Talie doesn’t carry a big bag around because she is always on the move. She uses a small bag that she ties to her belt. So, what does Talie carry around with her all the time? Let’s find out!

IMG_1965

Little cash: She carries just enough cash when she goes to town to buy supplies and a cup of joe from the town diner. She needs that caffeine to prepare for the daily work that needs to be done on the ranch and to keep her alert and on her toes to protect her town from mischief.

Pocket knife: This comes in handy when she is out working on the ranch. Also, if things get a little out of hand when she is trying to hold down the law she may need to whip it out for a little assistance.

Treat: She always has some type treat for her sidekick (Smarty—her horse).

Hair ties: She needs to have extras in case they break (which they often do). Talie doesn’t like it when she is out working on the ranch or riding about town and her hair keeps getting in her face.

Once the rooster sounds in the mornings Talie gets ready and makes sure she has all of her essentials in her bag and she is off to tackle the day’s adventures.

Riza’s Purse

Remember Riza from last week? Well she’s back! And this time she wants to share with you what is in her purse. These are her essentials to get her through the day.

For those of you who don’t recall meeting Riza, you can click here to find out what she is all about.
Starting off with the purse, she choose a black purse to contain her essential items because she is all about the minimalist look. The gold buckles remind her of her husband, Tate, and the old west. Inside you find an old rag, caramel candy, a blue bracelet, chapstick, pen and paper.

NOTE: She would also have cash on her, but we caught her at a time where she had just used up all her cash. Also, there is no cellphone because Riza is from a time when phones did not exist.

Well, why are all these items in her purse?

Old Rag: As you may know, Riza is an owner of a saloon along with her husband, Tate. She is constantly serving and cleaning up after others, hence the old rag.

Caramel Candy: As a 40-year-old woman, Riza and Tate have decided not to have children. Instead she focuses the love she would have for her children towards other children. Children especially love Riza because she is always handing out caramel candies.

Blue Bracelet: This bracelet represents the love Tate has for Riza. Tate gifted this to her on their 20 year anniversary and she keeps it with her, no matter where she travels or goes.

Chapstick: As a lover of loving clean and sharp, Riza decides to not wear makeup. Instead she adds chapstick to her lips daily to give them a powerful, yet soft glow.

Pen and Paper: Riza is constantly taking orders from her customers, thus she has the pen and paper in aiding her to remember what customers order.

This is what can be found in Riza’s purse. What’s in your bag?

Items that I use daily from my saddle:

Notebooks- for my classes.
Pens- to diligently take notes in my notebooks.
Cell Phone- debatably my most important item I carry daily, needed for nearly everything, ha!
Computer- Used for all of my internet surfing and classes, mostly for my DS106 class, of course.
Nasal Spray- Don’t really know why I have that in my bag, ha!
