Time Machine For a Website

So this assignment for time traveling through your favorite websites is awesome!  It’s funny how quickly we forget how certain websites looked before the last update,  You constantly hear people complain about every new Facebook update but how quickly we forget how we hated the last update just as much. Way Back is a great tool to look back at how things were!

But for the purpose of this assignment I chose to do a website that’s not Facebook.  I picked one of my old favorite music websites called finetune.  This website offered the ability to comb through their music catalog and create playlists.  The only catches at first were you were only allowed 3 songs from the same artist per playlist and the playlist needed to be at least 45 songs long to be playable.  This website opened me up to a whole world of music that would never known about through suggestions from similar artists and listening to other people’s playlists at my own leisure.  It was a really good tool to get to know specific bands and songs because of listening to your playlists randomly being played multiple times.  I spent many nights just going through music and learning about artists and new genres.  Sadly the website is not what it once was.  Because of the massive funding necessary to maintain a website like this and the money that would be due to record companies for using their songs, the website no longer offers the playlist building ability, This practically brought the community and usage of the site to a standstill, They are still in existence and have tried a few branch off ideas such as an online DJ similar to Last.FMs scrobbler that allows the website to access your iTunes and broadcast what you are currently listening to others but it never took off.  Fine tune also offered a few different players that could let you use your Wii to stream music to your TV and another app to stream to your I-Phone.  There are plenty of other websites that have developed like Fine tune such as Last.FM, Pandora, Grove shark and 8-track, but it is just inconvenient to have made all these playlist and not be able to add to them anymore.

I think flaw finetune had to its structure was poor programming, it was prone to freeze up and load things in an odd way.  Your player could often freeze or not load something causing you to have to restart the playlist.  Also later on skipping songs became a limited ability, they did not want you to make playlists solely for the purpose of listening to one song and just skipping the rest as filler.  This is true for most music player websites now though, with the exception of grooveshark.  Music sharing is a touch subject, the lines of ownership, stealing and radio have become blurred because of the internet and how we use it.  I don’t think these big companies and record labels that are against sites like fine tune and last.fm understand how greatly these internet radio sites affects the amount of people it brings to their artists.  A lot of people do buy the albums and pay to go to concerts and buy the merchandise simply from finding the music on their own through interactive sites like this.  It’s a shame that they are constantly being threatened by being shut down under different copyright acts.

Whatever humans can do…

…computers can do it better!

Right?

???????????????????????????????? ?That we fear in the industry and we welcome war to the consumption tax hike in two years after the first bullet.

Eh…maybe not.

For this DS106 assignment, “Google Translate Fail”, one must “find something in a foreign language and use Google Translate and laugh about how awful it is.” Oh, and while you’re at it, “if its a language you know, give an explanation of what it should be and list possible reasons it got messed up.” For this assignment, I chose to translate something from Japanese to English. The results, as you have seen, are quite..um, remarkable (kind of, at least).

For my line, I took it from a news page after typing in ? ???in Google search.

First, in regards to why the explanation is “messed up”, is because Google translate does not have the ability to understand the complex nuances of the language. Taken from a video (produced by Google presumably) found on the blog entitled Google Operating System, “these computers use a process called ‘statistical machine translation’ — which is just a fancy way to say that our computers generate translations based on patterns found in large amounts of text.” That means that there is really is no true “understanding” of a language to a computer. Translating comes down to, in simple terms, numbers or statistical correlations. So, in terms of quality, the translations are usually more wrong than correct. In terms of speed, however, it is certainly much faster.

So while Google translate isn’t the greatest in terms of quality, the speed it is able to translate at is incredible and will no doubt have us coming back to it again and again regardless of the lack of quality.

ds106 assignment – revamp your wordpress banner

(image credit: me! usage: public domain!)

Assignment: Revamp your blog by creating a new banner.

Process: The most “advanced” thing about this new banner is the curvy text effect. There’s a few other key steps that went into the creation of the banner that I’ll outline here though:

  • Created a new image in GIMP
  • Under image creation/initial attributes dialogue, I selected the specified banner size which is 500×160 pixels
  • I chose to fill the background with transparency, again, under the initial attributes dialogue when you create a new image
  • At first I just used the text tool as usual, and just put in the first text field “A SITE ABOUT JAY”.
  • So now it says something, but it’s boring and straight looking, so I created a path with the “paths tool” (icon looks like a fountain pen). You can play around with the paths tool, and delete/re-create the path if you don’t get the curvature you want.
  • Now that I have the path I want, I select the original text field I created, and click the “Text along Path” button.
  • Now I can see that they’re two instances of my text, the non-curved, and the curved, so I just delete the original text field, and merge down whatever layers until I just have two main things remaining, my text along a path, and the clear/transparent background.
  • I can now use the “stroke path” option under the edit menu which allows me to choose the thickness of the stroke, so I just played around and did a 6 pixel stroke to start with then make thinner and thinner strokes which is why you see the funny neon-sign effect. (I think it looks like an old-timey neon-sign, but others might disagree)
  • Save in PNG format, and upload it using the “Appearance” -> “Header” option under the dashboard of your wordpress blog.

Piece of cake.

Story: I wanted a simple, but not too simple banner. I didn’t really have anything in mind, and usually I’d put a lot more time if I wanted to be pro about it. I thought the tutorial on the curvy text would be a good supplement for the assignment so it didn’t just turn into an upload a banner only kind of thing.

ds106 assignment – revamp your wordpress blog

Section 3 – DS106 Assignment 3

For my third ds106 assignment I decided to do the web assignment section called “Google Maps Story” I decided to do this assignment to introduce korea more and also talk about korean army as well.

This is the area where i served about 50% of my military service in. I was in the DMZ called GOP (General Outpost). There isn’t many people you get to see here and the place is very quiet. We are far away from the city and the only building is the building we live in which consist of about 35 people. In the Korean Army you dont’ get many vacations but the ones you do are golden and are very memorable.

This is my home. If people have ever been to seoul they will know about gangnam. I live around 20-30 minutes away from there. I’ve lived here for about 7 years and have many memories of the place.

Well when i was out i decided to go to the beach. We drove here at midnight and we ate shellfish and clams with a little bit of alchohol and afterwards i went into the ocean because of the alcohol..

Still these memories will stay with me forever. I hope these pictures interested you and if you have any questions about korea come and ask me!

Google Maps Story

Linke to the assignment: Google Maps Story

Assignment: Use Google Maps to tell a story! It can be the story of a trip you took, a trip you would like to take, a strange occurrence, a war, anything you like! The only rules are that you have to use Google Maps proper in order to tell your story, and post it here

Process: I used google maps to creation a set of directions, and used screenshots taken via google maps to help tell the story.

Story:

My trip to Japan (quite possibly the most cost effective method) last August…..

My expedition began in Los Angeles, my hometown…

Image

It was a 35 day trip, consisting of blood, sweat, and tears. I could have spent $2000 on a round trip plane ticket, but instead i chose to travel “green” (goodbye jet fuel).

It started off quite nicely, cruising along highways and empty streets. It was as if I was in a movie, my hair blowing in the wind while driving a convertible. But as we all know, good things don’t last forever…

Here was the next set of instructions given to me:

Image

Wait…what? Kayak for 2,756 miles? Ok, challenge accepted.

11 days later, i finally arrived in Hawaii. I was exhausted, but felt like Bear Grills.

I decided to stop by a local hawaiian restaurant (not eating for 11 days is tough, trust me).

Image

Food has entered my system, Awesome.

After spending a few hours digesting food, it was back to the Kayak. This time i had to kayak across the pacific ocean to enter Japan….here we go.

Image

3,879 miles later, i was in JAPAN!!!!!

Random shore i ended up at (somewhere in Japan):

Image

I was exhausted, but i knew i had to stay strong. I stopped by a local sushi restaurant to reward myself.

Image

It was the best sushi i’ve ever eaten in my life. I took out my cellphone to call my grandparents (they were in Kyoto at the time), but i realized that my phone was drenched from the kayaking, so i was unable to let them know that i arrived.

DAY 35:

FINALLY, I ARRIVED AT TEMPLE UNIVERSITY JAPAN.

It was a long and exhausting trip, but it was definitely worth it. I had $2000 in my pocket (which subsequently had to be spent on medical bills due to the intense kayaking strain on both my arms), a smile on my face, and most importantly, a sense of accomplishment. I’ll definitely be taking the same route when i go back to the states this summer.

Remodeling for a Tastier Experience!

The Assignment:

Revamp your WordPress Banner.

The Process:

I first gathered six photos I have taken of dishes I’ve eaten. Next, I opened Photoshop and made a blank canvas of the exact pixels (960Wx260H). I then resized all the photos to fit onto the banner. After, I feathered  the edges of the photos and arranged them on the blank canvas.

The Story:

My name is NOMNOMreeses for a reason- I love food! I enjoy fine dining and love to try new and unique dishes. For this banner design, I decided I wanted to share some of the beautiful and delicious dishes I’ve had recently. This new banner is fresh and and fun! I feel it reflects my name wonderfully. : )

It looks so yummy too…

Fresh Prince on Google Maps

The Assignment: “Use Google Maps to tell a story! It can be the story of a trip you took, a trip you would like to take, a strange occurrence, a war, anything you like! The only rules are that you have to use Google Maps proper in order to tell your story “

The Process: I used google maps for all the images. Instead of creating my own story, I decided to use google maps to depict the story of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. My favorite show as I grew up, and yet still one of the best all time comedies. Please enjoy.

 Story:

Now, this is the story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I’d like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I’ll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air

In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of school

When a couple of guys
Who were up to no good
Startin making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said ‘You’re movin’ with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air’

I pulled up to the house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabbie ‘Yo homes smell ya later’
I looked to my kingdom
I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air

The Lyric is “The Fresh Prince of Bel air” written by Willard Smith and Jeffery Townes.

Google Maps Story- Road trip

Please full screen for best quality

The Assignment

I did this assignment from the web category. The directions are as follows:

Use Google Maps to tell a story! It can be the story of a trip you took, a trip you would like to take, a strange occurrence, a war, anything you like! The only rules are that you have to use Google Maps proper in order to tell your story, and post it here.

The Process

This assignment documents my road trip from Colorado to Los Angeles in the summer of 2010.

I started by going to Google Maps to plot my course again. Then I took a printscreen of the map and opened it up in Photoshop.

I used Flickr advanced search to find CC liscenced photos of the unique places that I travelled on this trip. Then inserted them into the document, using line tools and paint bucket tools to make the pictures look more like photographs. The text I added was TW Cen Mt size 18-22.

The Story

This is the path I drove from my house in Colorado Springs, CO to visit my girlfriend living in Santa Monica, CA. It took my about 24 hours of driving by myself, and was one of my greatest experiences thus far in my life. The sights I saw on my drive, their beauty is inexplicable.

The twists and turns of the Rocky Moutnain Passes, The Colorado River, The sunset in the dusty mountains of Utah, The bright lights and desolate desserts of Nevada, and the crowded 6-lane highways of California. Each of these special places deserves a blog post on their own. All in all, it was a beautiful journey that left me with a lot of time to think about life, the universe, and everything else.

To help me in my journey, I had the musical companionship of Enya, Enigma, Tenacious D, “A Horse With No Name” (which I’ve come to associate with the desolate land of Nevada’s dessert) and even the politcal comedic genious of Stephen Colbert’s “I am America, and so can you!”

I learned a lot on my journey; I fell in love with cruise control, I spent the night in my car at a gas station on the Utah-Nevada border, ate countless Subway BMT sandwiches, cliff bars, and dried fruit and almonds. I really got a sense of appreciation of myself, and my country from this journey. A lesson which I feel everyone should undergo in their lives.

So, go forth readers. Take a challenge, go travel alone and get to really know yourself

I can tell the story where I lived and I live by using Google Maps

This is my ds106 assignmnet that I chose.

I chose Google Maps Trip from web assignment. What should I do???

Use Google Maps to tell a story!! It can be the story of a trip you took, a trip would like to take, a strange occurance, a war, anything you like! The only rules are that you have to use Google Maps proper in order to tell your story, and post it here.

I tried to share the story of my trip but I usually visit the same place somehow, so I wonder which is the best way to upload it with my story on here. In addition, there are numerous places that I want to go if I tell the story of trip in the future.

I decided to tell the story of my old place to new place;)

The place 1

First of all, I was born in Kobe city, Hyogo prefecture, Japan. My parents’ hometown was Hyogo prefecture, so I was born there.

I really like this city because there are enough places to play and to have fun!!!!!!

The place 2

When I was 2 years old, my family moved to Chiba prefecture because of my father’s job.

I grow up there 2 years old to 10 years old. This city that I grow up is one of the famous dry beach.

I had a plan to clean up the dry beach per year when I was junior high school student.

The place 3

When I was graduated from junior high school, my family move to nearby old house.

My apartment did not fit us because my brothers and I were growing up, so my parents decided to move a house.

The place 4

My family decided to move to the other place again because my old brothers became independent.

We changed apartment to a house again. hahaha

This place that I lived is easy to take train because closest station stoped rocal and express.

The place 5

This is my living place right now;))

I decided to live with my boyfriend 4 month ago, so I live in nearby tuj and I can see the rainbow bridge from my window.

I appreciated my parents by doing everyting for me when I started living with him.

Process:

I open the Google Maps.

I search my old adress to new adress.

I copy the type of HTML link and put it on here.

DONE!!!
