Google Translate Fail

The Assignment
Under the web assignments, I found an assignment that I thought would be fun to do. :)
The assignment called Google Translate Fail, by Steven Q. Dangerfist, read:

Find something in a foreign language and use Google Translate and laugh about how awful it is. If its a language you know, give an explanation of what it should be and list possible reasons it got messed up.

The Process
I decided to translate some Japanese text to English. It would be funny because the sentence structures of Japanese texts and English texts are opposite so I knew for sure that there will be funny translations.
And yes, I did find an article under the technology section on Yahoo Japan that when I translated to English using Google Translate, it didn’t make any sense at all!

The Story
Everyone has at least experienced this translation fail on Google Translate. The more complex the original text is, the funnier the translations will be.
The original article, released on January 24th, 2012, was an announcement from Apple that there was a false application in the App Store called “Pursuit Special” which looked exactly like the application called “Camera+
The translation itself is the introductory part of the article and the translation should have been:

On January 21st, “iPhoneography,” a photo blog used on iPhone, contacted Apple that there was a false application found in the App Store.

but somehow, Google Translate translated in a humorous way!

Tutorial 1: From .zip to Hip

Hello, all! Here is my first tutorial. This tutorial will help you download, install, and activate a WordPress theme from a .zip file using File Manager in your control panel. In other words, this video will show you how I got this far with my website, without using one of the themes provided in the [...]

I do not want to kill you I want to help you

I was curious about the Google Translate Fail assignment. Is this something I would need to be bilingual to do? I only speak English, and I’m not as good at that as I should be.

I am interested in translation though. I did take a six-week Spanish 101 course five or six years ago, and I’ve been watching DVDs with the Spanish subtitles turned on ever since then. I thought it might help me learn, but all I pick up are the swear words. Did you know there’s a word for dammit that also means kitchen boy?

So I could have picked out some random LOTE text and translated it into English and wondered where it went wrong, but that wouldn’t have been much fun. Instead I used the Samuel L Ipsum placeholder text generator to come up with some text and translated it into Latin. Maybe then I would know some Latin f-bombs. Or maybe I could use it in place of some regular lorem ipsum text, just to see if anyone understands Latin. Or I could use Google Translate to bring it back to English and see what happens:

Normally, both your asses would be dead as fucking fried chicken, but you happen to pull this shit while I’m in a transitional period so I don’t wanna kill you, I wanna help you. But I can’t give you this case, it don’t belong to me. Besides, I’ve already been through too much shit this morning over this case to hand it over to your dumb ass.

Northmanni, et asinos vestros frixam quis sem sit mortui, sed fieri hoc detrahere dum Im ‘in a mauris tempus transeuntem, ita nolo te occidere volo iuvo vos. Sed non possum vobis hoc quod non pertinent ad me. Praeterea iam per multa mihi super hoc mane mauris hic tradere vobis subjugale mutum.

Normal, and your asses fried Climate book is dead, but to be done to detract from this when I’m on a the time passed by, so I do not want to kill you I want to help you. But I can not the fact that you do not belong to me. Further more this morning upon the already great is my impart unto you the dumb ass here.

I expected the translator would not handle slang and idioms well. Watching The Wire with Spanish subtitles was an interesting experience whenever the corner boys were on screen. The Spanish always seemed to be very specific, whereas the ghetto slang was anything but. C’est la vie.

ds106 Super Heroes: Bava Mathers

Super Heroes, we’ve got them in ds106. In digging the archives of bavatuedays, I recently came across Jim’s post on Cotton Mather, Marvel Supervillian? in which we see the source of his lovely blog icon. Ultimately, this leads to full profile bio of this dude, Cotton Mather.

And so I dig back, and find that Marvel has a giant pedia of character profiles, and it occurs to me that it would be fun to do some web page rewriting of characters.

Enter the ds106 profile of the dude, Bava Mather:

To do this, I make use of an old school HTML technique. I save the source code of the Cotton Mather page as a local HTML file (in Chrome, it is File -> Save Page As and use “Web Page, HTML Only”.

Now here is the key part- look at the URL for this page:

http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix3/cottonmather.htm

Chop off stuff from the right until you hit a “/”- this gives the root URL for this file, the UEL to the directory that contains this file on the web server:

http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix3/

Now open that HTML file you saved in a basic text editor (not ever, never, swear NEVER use MS Word), and look for the top area of the page, somewhere before the </head> tag, add this line:

<base href="http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix3/">

What I can do now is open this local HTML file (or upload it to my own server) and all of the content the original page uses (images, etc) will be available in my own copy- this is because the original HTML file references these files relative to its location on the server; our magic html above, makes our file act as if it is sitting besides the original.

From here it is a matter of doing some HTML editing and re-edit the original content, which likely will send most people screaming into the night. I’m not here to give HTML tutorials, there’s tons of them out there.

I’ve added this to ds106 as a WebAssignment – Profiles Of Ds106 Super Heroes (tag=WebAssignments314):

Select a profile of a Marvel comic character and rewrite the web page to build a super hero character our of someone involved in ds106. The easiest way to do this is to save the source of the web page as an html file, and either use the BASE HREF tag in the header for the root of the URL or to update the image links to be full URLs.

Then rewrite the content to more match the persona you are satirizing.

See the example of Bava Mather based on Cotton Mather

So who will you do as a profile? Don’t go looking for the Corn Dog dude.

The places I want to go for sure.

Assignment: Good Map Story
I would like to talk some place I want to go in the future.
Salar de Uyuni
First of all, I will introduce Salar de Uyuni.

Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat which is located in Blivia.
When it is covered with water, it becomes like a huge mirror.
?
Sorry, this video is in Japanese, but I selecetd this one because this has a so many amazing scene of Salar de Uyuni.
But, isn’t this fantastic??
Ths salt lake perfectly reflect the beautiful sky.
It is like you can hardly tell which side is heaven or earth!
Ths next place I would to tell is Jiuzhaigou Valley which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.
CIMG0119
It is located in China.
The valley combines clear blue lake, waterfalls, beautiful mountains, and forests.
Especially, I want to see this clear blue lake which is called five-flower lake!
You can clearly see the bottom of the water.
The lake changes its colar at times. It sometimes turns to ink-green and yellow, but it stays diamond blue most of the time.

Lastly, I want to visit Yurigahama beach in Okinawa!

My hometown is the closest prefecture to Okinawa, but I have never been to this beach.
This small beach only appears when the tide is low.
The sand on this beach is shaped like a star.
According to legend, the more you can collect the sand, the more happy you get.

There are more places I want to visit, but it would take forever to introduce all the places.
Through this blog, I realized that I love clear and blue water.

The places I want to go for sure.

DS106#5-WebAssignment-Google Translate Fail

This is my last blog post for ds106…I have chosen topic from Web section, and chosen “Google Translate Fail”. The reasons I have chosen this topic is because I have been thinking that Google Translator is suck for long time, and I hardly use google translator in my daily life. Anyway, I will show you how stupid google translator is…

I first put famous word from Japanese Animation, “One Piece“, into Google Translator.

I put “????????”?Kaizoku ou ni ore wa naru) which is the famous word that Luffy who is the protagonist of One Piece says in the story.  The proper translation of this sentence is “I will be a king of pirates”.

OK…I will put it into Google translator….

1)?????????I will pirate king

um…????

the english does not really make sence…it actually need “be” between “will” and “king”.

OK….then..I will put “I will pirate king” into Google translator and translate English to Japanese.

2)I will pirate ing ?????????(watashi wa kaizokuouremasu)

What????
This translation does not make any sence…!! First of all, you need to put  ”??” between “?” and “???”.
????king of pirate? is noun, but somewhat Google translate recognize “king of pirates” as verb.
I think the reason why Google translator could not translate correct is because the word “????????” has different gramatical order from English.

I recommend all of you guys to put some interesting Japanese words or words from anime or somewhere to put into Google translator, and Google translator make you fun!!

Soooooooo here is where I am from, it is Iran, Tehran (the capital city of Iran) in Ariashahr. This is where I used to live and where my home is. There are a lot of historical places in Iran including  Perspolis which was built more than 2000years ago. Also Iran is where Persian Carpets, Persian Cats, Sheesha, Pistachio come from. Also we have four season! So we have WINTER! hahahaha. Most people have the HOT weather image of middle eastern countries but it is actually colder than Japan in winter. We have one of the biggest Ski Pist which is world’s 4th biggest mountain around Tehran, so I used to go to ski every weekend. It only takes one hour to go there and it is very cheap as well. This is why a lot of foreigners come to Tehran during winter time to ski! It costs approximately 2000yen per day, including renting everything and the entrance! You are more than welcome!
