Way Down in the Hole

For this assignment I chose to speed up the theme song of The Wire. I tried other scenes, but I liked this the best. I downloaded the video off of UMW Media Hub and opened it in Movie Maker. I then used the split tool to cut the video and simply sped it up by 2. Enjoy!

What if Jay and McNulty talked like Chipmunks?

Corbin Bleu once said, “I can do a really high-pitched cartoon voice. Everybody always say they like that.” I like it when McNulty and Jay talk in a really high pitch voice. Jay sounds really funny when he talks like a chipmunk. I laugh so hard, I’m like:

So for the video assignment I did (2.5 stars), I took the clip from Season 2 of The Wire of when McNulty comes back into the office and was looking for Jay. I love that scene. I wondered how Jay and McNulty would sound like if they were chipmunks. I found the perfect video assignment to do that. So all I did, I used the same video program which was wondershare. After putting the video into the timeline, I double clicked on it and went to the audio of it which I changed the pitch to the highest. It sounds so funny that I would love to hear every episode of them talk like this. Here’s the video and hope you guys enjoy it:

Jay is in The Wire Trailer

Sophocles once said, “I would prefer even to fail with honor than win by cheating.” I would as well do the same thing. I do my own work clearly and first. I did a video assignment which I thought would be fun and creative to work on of my work.

I used Wondershare and took clips from videos to create my video. It was a lot of editing and changing the audio of the video and music a bit but I like the video so far. It’s great that it made me dance like this:

Anyways I hope you guys enjoy my video! Besides JAY is in this video! :D Here it is! Enjoy!

Preparation is key (for video assignments and other such things).

While I enjoy watching Vines, I do not have the app downloaded on my phone. Much like Twitter, unless it’s used to communicate with friends or family, entertain friends or family, or I am a celebrity/comedian/singer/actor sharing my work, I see no real reason why people would want to view 6 seconds of my life.

Despite this attitude, I am choosing my first video assignment to be one created on Vine.

What attracted me to this assignment was the literary aspect; I love books and reading, so anytime I get to nerd-out (yes, I am totally using that as a verb) and reference a favorite novel of mine, I will gladly take the opportunity.

The prep work for this assignment isn’t too difficult, considering the fact that the video only has to be 6 seconds long.

After viewing the provided example, my mind immediately thought of the movie Clueless–or rather, the book that Clueless is based off of: Emma. Thanks to the speaker’s attitude portrayed by her body stance and vocal inflection–very California Valley girl–I was reminded of the 90s film, and anything to do with social class and judgement based on aforementioned class reminds me of Jane Austen or Dickens.

Thankfully, I wasn’t too far off; the book was Pride and Prejudice. I think the original assignment poster could have made the time period more obvious by using a stereotypical English accent and maybe dressing up a bit (fancy springtime hats, anyone?), but otherwise, the example–the only example for this assignment, unfortunately–is cute.

I know which book I will be referencing (don’t worry, it’s not Dracula or anything Palahniuk related), and the two items I need I can easily find in my closet or at a grocery store (a dress and bread, specifically–yup, it is going to be an interesting mix!). The last clue will involve a certain phrase/line, so the guessing shouldn’t be too difficult!

This piece is one of my favorite novels and is a popular one, so my readers should have encountered it sometime during their academic career.

The only thing that I will alter slightly is I will not film the Vine on the actual Vine app. I don’t want to make an account just for one video, so I will record six seconds of footage and edit it together on iMovie before uploading it to Vimeo. Again, I like to keep all of my videos/files together for organizational purposes!

I will be honest: Sherlock caught my eye in this next assignment.

I remember watching this video when it first made its rounds around Tumblr a couple of years back, and it is still just as funny. Oh, dramatic, angry chipmunk John and ever-stoic-chipmunk Sherlock–how I love you.

The example including Samuel L. Jackson is pretty much awesome; his voice is as iconic as Morgan Freeman’s in this day and age (Nick Fury FTW!). Hearing him narrate this parody of a children’s book is funny enough as it is, but to make his voice higher is just extra hysterical. I do think the language in the video could use a disclaimer at the start of the post, and the video itself could be shortened a teensy bit. After about a minute, the audience sort of gets the point.

I didn’t think something could actually be funnier than the aforementioned post, but Mel Gibson in Braveheart with a chipmunk voice is actually in the running.

My parents love to quote this movie; I myself have never watched the whole thing through, because it’s just too violent. My mom, however, loves to go outside when it’s beautiful out or after a long day indoors, stretch her arms, and bellow,  “FREEDOM!” in reference to this scene.

I really like the use of this dramatic scene in a humorous assignment–a nice juxtaposition. I agree with the poster, also–the chipmunk effect does not help his Scottish accent much. Sorry, Mel.

After great deliberation and many texts to my friend, I decided to chipmunk-ify the opening sequence from 1996 Romeo + Juliet. I love Leondardo DiCaprio, and the movie–while apparently staying the truest to the original Shakespeare script, according to my friend’s English professor–is extravagant and ridiculous in all the best ways. This opening sequence is particularly excessive.

To make things even more entertaining, I couldn’t find the original English version on YouTube, but I did find a dubbed Italian version. Now, we will have the joy of watching out-of-sync dialogue and high pitched voices! This will be a fun one.

Together, these will equal 5 stars (2.5 each).

Stay tuned for the finished projects next week!

My music video in Memory of My Cousin, Grant Christensen

I decided to do the Video Assignment 1447 for 5 stars.  This assignment gives you the task of making a music video.  I decided that I would make a music video in Memory of my Cousin, Grant that recently passed away.

The first step in constructing this project was very easy.  There is a song “Homesick” by Mercy Me that is so special to me.  I cannot listen to this song without crying.  It is such a touching song.

The next step was to create a folder in which I saved all of the photographs that I was going to use for the video.  I also added to this folder images gained from google images that were discovered under the search phrase “sayings for lost love ones.”  After collecting all of the artwork, I went into piZap and added text to the last photo that I used in the video.

I next opened Microsoft Live Movie Maker.  I added all of the photos and phrases into Movie Maker.  I arranged them in an order that I wanted them in and located phrases in areas that I wished to have them in.  I also added a title page that I wanted to fade away into the photo show. I then added the music that I had saved as a mp3 from Youtube by using the site video2mp3.net. Since the song is 3 mins 41 secs, I added and subtracted the display time on a few of the photographs so that I could make the video exactly the same time.

This is a very special video to me.  I know that no one in our class knows my cousin but I did my best in constructing this video to attempt to show you the incredible person that my cousin was.  He was so passionate about life and loving others.  He loved his sons more than life itself.  He is so missed by us all.  Grant this is for you…

PSA The Wire Plan to End Gun Violence

Si Robertson once said, “It ain’t gun control we need; it’s sin control.” It’s true though what Si said. There have been people talking about to end gun violence. I wanted to do a PSA video about it. I thought after seeing a video assignment of making a PSA announcement and relating it to at least one of The Wire episodes this week, it would be perfect. I wanted to make it really great such as the minion in the GIF below making an announcement:

Well to do this assignment, I used a program called Wondershare and all I did was took some video clips from two of the episodes of The Wire we were supposed to watch this week (Season 3 Episode 8 and 9). Also I took the scene where Kima got shot. I got the plan to end gun violence video that I used for the radio show with the audio only. I mixed them together and created this:

Hope you guys enjoy it!

Nowhere To Hide

I decided to do the Alt Ending video assignment as a Blair Witch take-off, with my kids providing a surprise ending.  It’s every mother’s dream to have a few moments alone, but the kids always seem to find you in the end!  They had a lot of fun rehearsing their line and practicing […]

Cha-Ching Goes The Swear Jar

I’ve wanted to do something with this scene since I saw it in my pre-semester binge-watch of “The Wire”.  It’s a terrific use of photography and positioning, with very little sound and dialogue.  Pretty much the only dialogue is a repeated epithet used with a variety of inflections and emphases. I replaced it with […]

Good Riddance Assignment #2

For my second video assignment, i was feeling nostalgic and went with the “High School Memories” assignment. Now, i know you’re all thinking “wow this one is really easy why not be creative.” Well, we did just have a week full of inspiration. I’m inspired by my past because i’ve grown so much! Sure, i’m only a sophomore in college, but high school was still a little while ago! It’s always nice to look back and see how far you’ve come. Now that i’m done being all mushy and sentimental, i’ll show you what i did and why i did it. Let’s go!

Pictures:

Believe it or not, i didn’t get a smartphone until college. Yeah, sad, i know. So i actually don’t have any videos from high school. All i contain are really embarrassing photos. But those are way better, right?  RIGHT. As much as i love being vain, i didn’t just include pictures of myself. High school was about your friends! I’ve included embarrassing photos of my closest friends who are still my best friends today. Yeah, weird. High school friends.. The way i organized my slide was i went in chronological order. I started off with the earliest pictures of myself (i’m basically a baby) and then i went to my senior year. If i were to include all my pictures, you would be bored and it would take too long to upload to youtube. I’ve cut it down so don’t worry! Now, as we all like to believe High School was perfect, it wasn’t. I added some photos that aren’t necessarily bringing back GREAT memories, but hey, that’s life.

Music:

I enjoy being cliche. Who doesn’t? Other than my friends, music was a big part of my high school career. Since elementary school, Green Day was my favorite band. Yes, that means they were in High School also. By the time i went into high school, i learned to control myself and i wasn’t the same obsessive girl i was in middle school. But! i still loved them nonetheless. Actually, i always consider Green Day my favorite band just out of respect. You’re probably thinking “Wow Carmela, you’re being really creepy. Why are you talking so much about Green Day..” Well, i chose to add the song “Good Riddance” to my video montage. Yes, Good Riddance. Probably everyone’s favorite song by them. I mentioned i like to cliché, right? Don’t all video montages of the past play to that song? Ha! This makes me laugh because i really do love Green Day so i can use this song without being cheesy or unoriginal. Who cares. ENJOY THIS!

IMOVIE:

Again, i used Imovie. So far it has treated me pretty well. I also just love the fact that i can upload my songs from Itunes directly into my project. I’m not lazy, i swear. Either way, imovie rules. And no, i’m not getting paid by Apple to say that. Although…. i would accept any offers if they ever decided to. Point being, i’m going to be using imovie for a lot of things so DEAL WITH IT. I do hope you enjoy my pictures and take a moment to look at your past. Whether it brings back good memories or bad, they’re a part of you. :)

Arcade Fire & Talking Heads Assignment 1

For my first video assignment, i decided to start off confident and do the “Musicless Music Video”. This was a little difficult for me. No music in a music video? Come on! That’s torture. So, let me show you exactly how i created my masterpiece.

Video: My first step was to choose a music video. Wow, this was hard. Should i go with something safe and from this century? Sure, i could. Could i go retro and pick a cool music video because let’s face it, old music videos are freaking weird. Yes. I could. Which i did! One of my favorite older bands are the Talking Heads. They’re just perfect. Choosing my favorite song by them was difficult but good thing i didn’t have to. All i needed was my favorite video by them! I went with the classic “Naive Melody”.  The video is very interesting so i figured i’d mess around with that.

Taking Out The Music: Like i said, this was torture. Why would i deprive the world of this great song! It’s insane. What i decided to do was take out the song and replace it with something else. I just didn’t like the idea of adding sound effects other than the song itself to the video. It wouldn’t have come out right with this video. I could have switched videos and picked something i could have worked with better but… that’s not me. I HAVE to use this video. I don’t think i’ve ever mentioned the Talking Heads in DS106 and i’m making a point to now! I remember a while ago i heard a cover of this song that was fantastic. Well, as i thought harder and longer, i remembered that the cover was done by Arcade Fire. Now there was no going back. I needed this video and this song. Arcade Fire and Talking Heads have a pretty close relationship. David Byrne (lead singer) went on stage with Arcade Fire once. Now, their cover of Naive Melody is kind of old and if you’re not a fan of Arcade Fire, you won’t like it. Oh, well. I love it! What i decided to do was take out the original song and add in this cover to the video. I was really excited but this is just too perfect (the idea). Now that you’ve read my background, let me show you how i completed this!

Steps:

1. I went on youtube and looked for a good version of the Naive Melody music video. Considering this video is really old, that was hard. I stumbled on this video which seemed decent, compared to the other versions of course. Once i picked this video, i opened up Imovie because i have a macbook. What i had to do here was a little difficult. I’ve never made videos like this before so i had to search around for tips. I realized that you could use the Quicktime Player to record your screen. I decided to do that and record the video as i played it. This was pretty easy but also kind of difficult because i had to choose the right time to record. Finally, i saved this recording to my “Movies” file on my laptop. The next step was to open this in Imovie.

2. Imovie. After saving the recording of the music video, i opened it up in Imovie. I had to make sure it uploaded properly and such. I edited out some frames because my cursor was in the shot from pressing and play and minimizing the screen. After i made sure it uploaded properly and made the frames good, i wanted to add the beautiful music to the video.

3. Adding music. I was grateful to have Imovie work so conveniently for me. I clicked on the sounds section and found out that you could upload music straight from itunes. Perfect! I went to youtube to find the cover (which was performed live) and converted it to an MP3 through this sketchy website. I then made sure i had the whole video highlighted so the song would cover the whole video. This worked out pretty well. The music matched up to the time of the video and all was well. I’m almost done!

3. Finalizing everything was my last step. I had the music ready and the video set. So i literally clicked on finalize my project and it saved it. Imovie allowed me the option to upload directly to youtube so i did that. It was really a breeze. My biggest fear was having an upload error but so far so good! Below i’ll post the original of everything and then my video. Enjoy!
