Choose your own adventure

I’ve just discovered this really cool website that helps you create your own Choose Your Own Adventure stories!!!

It’ll be interesting to see how I can get my students online to share this resource with them but I’ll be back. Just playing around I wrote this little story as a starting point and practice tutorial for myself.

This opens up a lot of options for me as a writer and as a teacher. (Just brainstorming some ideas, I could have each link be written by a different student and we could write the whole story as a class and read it aloud later when it’s finished…)

Not to mention there are tons of interesting stories on this website and this cool looking “game” I don’t even know how you would play but I’ll be playing around here for awhile.

My ideal room… a 4 season sunroom

My ideal room would be a sunroom, with lots of natural light, plants, fish, and somewhere to rest and relax to enjoy it all.

Buzzfeed ds106 character quiz 2.0

For this assignment, I went back to the which ds106 character are you quiz I made for buzzfeed a few weeks ago and incorporated vastly more characters and questions. I created a spread sheet with all the characters, their descriptions for the outcomes, and their answers to the various questions. I hit a hiccup when buzzfeed told me that I can only add one person to each answer so they all have to be unique. I still have a few that have variants of the same answer because I designed the quiz without that in mind. I tried to include all the ds 106 characters, but there were a few that didn’t make the cut. The primary reason was that there was too little info in that persons description for me to not have to totally invent their character for the quiz ( I tried to stay to what the creators would have wanted from their characters), or the character was so unique that it would have vastly different and obvious answers. I have one character that meets that criteria because it is humorous, and I did not want to detract from that.  I tried to add a few imaged to the quiz this time to spice it up as well, I think I will keep revising it over the next few days to get it more to my liking.

Here is the final version which I have yet to figure out how to embed.

Google Trains Late. Lost.

This assignment is to, using google translate, find something that does not translate well across languages and give some thought to it. Given the western theme of the class, I thought I might take it just a step further, and since many western saying are idioms, mix them up and see what I come out with after translating them to a few languages then back.  I used sayings from Legend of America.

  • Don’t name a cow you plan to eat. > Armenian >Corsican > Chinese > Hawaiian >English =  I found ” ship.   (Ok, maybe that was too much.)
  • There never was a horse that couldn’t be rode, there never was a rider that couldn’t be throwed.  > Estonian >Esperanto > Irish >English =  It was not a horse that can not be climbed the occupier could not be throwed.  (Ok, now not enough)
  • Never approach a bull from the front, a horse from the rear or a fool from any direction. > Belarussian > Hebrew > Maltese > Vietnamese > Korean > English = At the front never a good cow, horse back or a fool from any direction.
  •  The biggest troublemaker you’ll probably ever have to deal with watches you shave his face in the mirror every morning.  >Afrikaans > Zulu > Arabic > Japanese > Chinese > English > Maybe they are difficult to deal with, every morning shave my face in the mirror of time.  (Mirror of time seems pretty metaphysical and philosophical, that quote might have even more wisdom now if you can access it.)

And now, for one grand finale, I shall find a substantially long saying and run it through every language in translate. I don’t know if it could get more jumbled than that first result, though.  Turns out it can.
“After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good he started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter came along and shot him. The moral: When you’re full of bull, keep your mouth shut. ” Turned into “Taurus dark Puma statement of value Beckett  Robert B and soul.”
I can see how a few of those words appeared… but most of that is nonsense. Natural languages are a pretty interesting and complex things. Maybe I need the time mirror to sort all this out.

Google Translate Fail

In this 2 star assignment, I had to find a website that was in a foreign language and laugh at how awful the translation is when pressing the translate to English button using Google Chrome. This was pretty easy assignment because I already had an idea what website I was going to look at in a different language.

That site was the Spanish NBA website, which I had heard about in one of my other classes this semester. So I went to the website using Google Chrome and pressed the translate button after reading what it said in Spanish. I was able to read what it said because I took Spanish in college, and I had the ability to read Spanish very clear after taking the course; the only thing that I have trouble with in Spanish is speaking and listening to it.

Spanish NBA

From translating it to English, the only mistakes that I could find was examples where the English translation didn’t pick up some of the Spanish, so it was kept in Spanish still.

Spanish NBA 2

Other than this clear mistake, there weren’t any other mistakes on the website, so I have to give credit to Google for having a pretty accurate translation tool. For 2 stars, this assignment was characterized perfectly and I wish there were more easy assignments like this one. Here is a link to the website where I used the Google Translate.

Web Assignment – Google Map Trip

In this assignment, you use Google Maps to tell a story, whether it is historical, or something you personally experienced. I used Google maps to show my visit to Seattle, WA, which I did to watch The International, a multi-million dollar tournament for Dota 2. This was 2 years ago, and at the time, it was very visceral. I didn’t think much about the trip itself, I lived the experience. Now that I reflect on the entire trip, I realize what a formative event it was. I was traveling to the complete other side of the country, alone, to stay with people I didn’t know, to go to an event I had no experience with. It was one of those early “adult” experiences that test your abilities and resourcefulness. I had to be completely self-reliant for about 10 days in a big, unfamiliar city. Luckily, it all turned out well. I had a great time at the event, it was nice to see Seattle, and I returned home having gained knowledge and experience. The link to my map is below, with a picture of the entire trip is below.

I used the google maps online tool to create and share this story. It’s pretty self-explanatory: you add in your locations, and you can connect them with lines, or with routes like those you would use when driving somewhere. I didn’t want to give my exact address obviously, but I gave the general location. Now that I look on the visual feedback, it’s shocking to me what a distance I traveled, almost hitting the four corners of the US.

Original text:

For this assignment, I simply looked up a Chinese news article and took a section out of it to be plugged into google translate. The resulting translation did not make much sense to say the least.

It’s kind of unfortunate that one of the most spoken languages in the world cannot be correctly formatted and translated for everyone else. Come on google.

Updating Merrill’s Ride

For this assignment, I decided to base the story on Merrill Shale having sold his wagon and upgraded after he started raking in poker winnings. I originally tried with both Autotrader and Ebay motors, but the code was seemingly too sophisticated for X-ray googles, so I went to craigslist instead, which turned out to be pretty far from perfect as well. I could not get access to the other images on the scroll, so I found a vehicle posted that only had one photo. Then, I started remixing the elements so they would make more sense for the story I was telling. I was moderately pleased with how it looked in X-ray goggles, but when I published it, the code was apparently somewhat jumbled. I attempted to ascertain why or see if I  could, perhaps, resolve the issue with my albeit limited html knowledge, but x ray would not let me click on the actual page because it has too many elements.    This is the link to the page,  and here is a screenshot of what it looked like in xray.

Web Assignments – Privacy on the Web

I found this assignment extremely interesting. The first part of the assignment asked us to think about open source tools:

Count the number of open source programs you are using on your computer today. How many commercial software programs could be replaced with free and open source alternatives. I counted 4 commercial products on my system. If you need to, use a browser to get a list of open source programs which are available in place of commercial software.

Open source technology and information is incredibly important. It allows individuals the opportunity to learn and share data on equal levels (at least in terms of the applications they are using).

Regarding my time at UMW, I’m thankful for my professors who spend the time to find open source information for their students. It shows that they understand the financial burden text books and software applications may place upon students. If open source platforms are adopted for educational resources, it allows a standardization of information. One of my favorite professors at UMW (Dr. Greenlaw) will be hosting a conference this summer in Fredericksburg on this topic. He hopes to share that open source textbooks are just as good as the ones publishers sell. The main benefit to them? EVERYONE can access them.

In terms of software and technology, another web tool that I find incredible is Office Libre. Microsoft Suite tools are necessary for every student and working professional. These tools cost a hella lot though. Software such as libre allow for individuals who may not have the financial means to access microsoft tools a chance to create documents and information of the same level.

I realize this post came off as a rant. I’m thankful though that this assignment allowed me to think about my opinions regarding web tools and hopefully share those ideas with you.

Web Assignment – Email! Email! Read All About It!

I created an email advertising for tourism in Tombstone, Arizona, a town I’ve used a couple times in past assignments. This assignment uses the website Vertical Response to create this ad, and actually allows you to send it out to people, but a) I didn’t have emails to send it to, and b) I don’t want to spam random people with an ad. Tombstone is home to a lot of history: it earned the reputation as a tough western town, and boomed for a while due to its silver mine. It almost became a ghost town, but tourism has revitalized it, sustain its modest population by telling newcomers its history. I couldn’t think of a better place to advertise, especially given the context of this course.

tombstone

Since this was done through a website, the process was very easy. It had a wide arrangement of templates, so I just picked the one that fit the best. I got pictures off of Google, and highlighting what I thought as majors draws, attractions, or distinguishing factors. I created the ad in context of the town’s boom period, although it could have easily been made for current attraction.
