Google Street View Story Telling

The second assignment I chose to do for this week was to tell a story with an image that I found on google street view. This assignment was worth 3.5 stars brining me to the 8 stars that I need for this week. Surprisingly, I was only the second person to complete the assignment. I really enjoyed searching around for something that I could use to tell a story. I also learned that there are lots of places in New York City where you can actually go inside of buildings using street view! I had never seen anything like that which was cool!

After exploring New York for about 20 minutes, I saw the World Trade Center memorial on the map. I toggled my little man over there where I found this. It looks as if these men are standing at the side of the memorial grieving. Its a heartbreaking photo, but also striking as our technology can capture such a private moment that is put on the web for everyone to see.

Furbies

For this assignment, I thought of the perfect idea. I would remix a craigslist ad so that it was a plea for someone to take this person’s Furby off their hands. Anyone who has ever owned a Furby knows that they do weird and creepy things. They’ll turn on without batteries, randomly say things, keep moving after being run over by a car, the list goes on. Craigslist posts can be pretty wacky like this, so I thought it was an appropriate site to remix.

Here’s my craigslist ad.

Way Back Time Machine

Assignment 3: Way Back Time Machine (2 stars)

For this assignment, my task was to use Way Back Time Machine to look at how a website has changed over time. It really is amazing how much progress on a website can be made in so little time.

I decided to check out the evolution of the UMW website, because just over the past 3 three years I can recall a lot of changes that have been made. The following picture is a screenshot of the website in 2004, which is the first record of the website that the time machine has on file. For the most part, it is pretty user friendly, however one big thing that I noticed is the extremely small font and lack of photos. There are a lot of words on this page and it is not very aesthetically pleasing.

The picture below is a photo of the current website in 2016.  The first thing you notice with this new page is the picture right in the center. This picture area rotates through about 5 photos, each with a personal story attached to it. This gives the website a much homier and welcoming feel. It is also a lot easier to navigate as the options across the top of the website are much larger and user friendly.

Easy to navigate websites are very important. There is nothing more frustrating than having trouble finding the information you need on a site. This assignment was really interesting because I could see how much progress has been made in just 12 years.

Sacagawea Uses Social Media

Assignment 2: What They Might Have Done in Social Media (3.5 stars)

This assignment required me to make a “Fakebook” for a historical figure of my choice, and post what I think they would’ve posted about way back in the day. I actually had so much fun with this assignment.
I decided to make a Fakebook for Sacagawea. I had to brush up a little bit on my history of her before thinking of my posts, but once I had some background information, the posts just came to me.

Running GPS Art!

The first assignment I chose to do this week was to create some running art! To do this I spent some time on map my run trying to find an object that I could map out while I run. This was difficult…. after about 15 min I settled for a leaf that I could find on one of the side streets near where I live. From there I used the app on my phone to record my path on my run! I think it kind of looks like a leaf?! Its fall right.

My Future Room

Assignment 1: Create Your Own Room (4 stars)

I chose this assignment because I am really into home decor and Pinterest, so this stood out to me. I love watching shows on HGTV and imagining how my future home is going to look. I think there is nothing more exciting than designing the future place you’re going to live!

This assignment was pretty easy to complete, since all I had to do was look through Pinterest, which I do pretty often. I looked at a bunch of different tags and just added things that I liked. I think that my future room will probably be a light grey in color, because it’s really easy to match stuff with it. I would have a queen size mattress with a fluffy comforter and a lot of pillows, because sleep is one of the most important things in my life (even though I don’t get much of it).

I also am a big fan of using photographs as wall decor. I love looking back on good memories just by looking on my walls! I also think having white lights in rooms is a really cozy touch, so my future room will definitely have them strung from the ceiling.

Another thing that I really would like is a nice big rug in the center of the floor, especially if there are wood floors. It’s something that you don’t think has a big effect to the overall appearance, but it makes a huge difference and really brings the room together.

Dream Vacation

Another Pinterest assignment! I’m finding that I like this website more and more…there’s no limit to what you can find on Pinterest.

When pinning posts for this assignment, I found I had several ideas of a dream vacation, so I pinned posts that had to do with all my ideas. I would love to visit Ireland, take a vacation at a lake house, go camping/hiking, stay in a cabin in the woods, and do all of those things with a dog by my side. I think all of these things are possible with the right amount of planning, money, and time. In order to travel with a dog I obviously need to be at a place in my life where I can have a dog. I also need to be able to have a steady job that I can take days off from. I think these things will be possible several years after I get out of college because hopefully I will have a dog, more money, and a good job that provides the money I would need to go places.

Here is my Pinterest Dream Vacation board.

Say What?

Google Translate can either be incredibly helpful or the exact opposite. My mission was to put something into Google Translate that would translate it into something funny. So I played around a bit and came up with this:

capture

I found that when I went from a foreign language to English, for the most part the translation seemed to be correct. Google Translate has really improved over the years. So I had to mess around with things like the above to get something ridiculous. I thought that this one was particularly weird.

Clover in Pictures

This assignment had me create a board on Pinterest for a character of my choice. I chose to create a board for my character Clover that I created for Dystopia Rising, a post-apocalyptic LARP game. Clover is a Natural One, which is a race that is like Native Americans in that they have tribes, they live off the land, and they stick to their own. She lives in Appalachia in a valley, and her tribe is centered around farming and growth of all things. I kind of went a little overboard on this assignment…I had a lot of fun finding pictures that described Clover and putting them all together. Here is my board about Clover.

Harness Relationships: Make A Map With Kumu

For this assignment I decided to map my family. Unfortunately there are 180 in my family so I went with the next best, The Stark family. You might recognize this dysfunctional family from the hit TV show Game of Thrones.
